21 The bargain
I went back to Fran after Amos was gone, checking her for a sidearm, a knife, or anything else I could use. If she had been carrying, Jet had taken her weapons, along with everything else that had been brought to the house. This was a shitty game of cat and mouse. At least for me.
I was the mouse.
It wasn't the first time I wished I could animate two corpses at once. I could have used the backup because I wasn't entirely convinced I was alone in the house. It didn't make sense to leave a threat and clear the area completely. If not another soul, then a hidden camera, a fly on the wall.
We didn't have a lot of time. If we had any at all.
I considered letting Carl go. He was a decent distance away, though his thread was still strong thanks to the extra signal being passed out here. It was no wonder users loved Vegas so much. I was handling him with relative ease, enough that I had forgotten he was still up and running.
I left the atrium and headed for the foyer. I couldn't bring back users, so Fran was off-limits to me. The ghosts in the fountain, on the other hand?
One was bigger than the other, an ugly guy with crooked teeth and a fat nose. I could hear the magic pulsing around me, feel the strength of the fields. I'd never done two before. I'd also never been to Vegas since I'd made the leap from sensitive to necromancer. It was worth a shot.
I put my hand on the side of his face. It was cold and bloated. Without his name, he'd be harder to control. But I wanted to know. No, I had to know if I could do it. If it was even possible. I wasn't worried about Death; he would know where I was already through Carl. What more could he do? A second fighter would be invaluable.
"Wake up," I said, passing the magic from him to me. His cheek grew warmer under my touch, and I could feel something coming back into him. At the same time, Carl's thread began to stretch, as though I was using the same elastic string to bind them both.
I let it go. Maybe if both of them were in the same room or at least a little closer. It was an interesting experiment and an interesting outcome.
I needed to find the cellar.
I figured the stairs would be in or near the kitchen, and the kitchen would be off the dining room. I found the dining room through the door on the left side of the central area, past a sitting room. I also found three more dead ghosts laying there, two with bullets in their noggins, the other with a heavy statue resting on top of a crushed abdomen. Jet.
I picked up the pace, circling an ornate dining table and passing into a large, full-service kitchen. It was restaurant size and quality, stainless steel and well-organized.
